Ending Traditional Beliefs of Female Genital Mutilation

Women and girls in certain communities face violence, abuse, and mental and sexual health issues due to harmful traditional practices like Labia Minora Elongation (LME). This practice, forced on girls as young as 8, especially in schools, is rooted in cultural myths and aims to prepare them for womanhood, marriage, and to enhance sexual pleasure. LME leads to prolonged physical and psychological suffering and contributes to child abuse, early marriage, and the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Despite its harmful effects, LME persists due to false beliefs that it reduces childbirth pain, prevents rape and infections, and increases marriage prospects.
